The Dawoodi Bohra communities in Leicester, Birmingham, and London recently organised wellness-focused events for their senior members, emphasising physical health, mental well-being, and social connection. These initiatives reflect broader efforts across the UK to address the needs of an ageing population, demonstrating how community-led solutions can help address national challenges.
In Leicester, seniors engaged in therapeutic activities and gentle exercises tailored to their needs. Board games such as Carrom and bingo provided cognitive stimulation and encouraged social interaction.

“This event has given me a chance to reconnect with old friends and find new ways to stay active,” said one participant, highlighting the role of such gatherings in alleviating isolation.
Taher Jafferbhai, a community physiotherapist, conducted a physiotherapy session. The exercises, aimed at improving mobility and balance, aligned with public health recommendations encouraging seniors to maintain physical activity to reduce the risk of falls and promote independence.
In London, community members gathered for a ‘Chit Chat and Chai’ event to talk about critical winter health concerns. The event began with a traditional Pakistani breakfast and outdoor activities at the neighbouring Belvue Park. Later, Dr Huzaifa Adamali shared information on Covid, flu, and RSV vaccinations, alongside advice on accessing NHS benefits.

Hamza Jivanjee, a senior community member, appreciated the organisation.
“Nothing like a scrumptious breakfast and outdoor activity in good company followed by an informative session on taking care of your health. Hats off to the organisers. We need more of the same going forward,” he said.
In Birmingham, senior community members came together for a frolic day which included interactive games and light exercises tailored to their needs, encouraging both engagement and healthy living. This initiative provided an educational and enjoyable environment, helping the participants stay active and connected with each other.

These events align with the UK’s broader goals of promoting senior well-being by addressing isolation, enhancing access to healthcare information, and encouraging physical activity.
With the number of seniors in the UK projected to rise significantly in the coming years, such grassroots efforts underscore the importance of community-driven solutions in complementing national initiatives. As one attendee aptly remarked, “These moments remind us that we are never alone, and there is joy to be found at every stage of life.”
By fostering inclusion and well-being, these events contribute to a healthier and more resilient society, echoing values shared across the UK.
