The holy month of Ramadan, the most anticipated period in the Muslim calendar, is a time for fasting between sunrise and sunset, focusing on prayer and spiritual self-reflection, and giving back to those who are less fortunate.
This year, the Dawoodi Bohra community of Leicester gave back by participating in a bake sale to raise funds for charity.
Bakers and caterers from the Leicester Bohras and the wider Muslim community came together to organise a Charity Food Sale, selling donations of a wide range of sweet and savoury treats that showcased the culinary talent within the local community. The event was a great success, raising over £10,000 for charities in the UK and those supporting vulnerable people in rural Malawi, Syria and Morocco. The generous donations provided assistance in a number of ways, including:
- Food packs for families
- Much needed financial aid for orphanages
- Distribution of clothes and medical necessities
- Donations to several Leicester food banks
In response to the overwhelming support received for this event, Shabana Rasool from Tia’s Taste, one of the organisers, stated,
“A heartfelt and truly appreciated thank you goes to the Dawoodi Bohra community. Not only did local businesses from the community donate, but they also brought on the day a team of volunteers who worked amazingly hard. This really shows communities can work together and make a difference. Thank you again.”
In addition – and continuing with the charitable spirit of Ramadan – a group of talented bakers from the Leicester community of Dawoodi Bohras organised a sale of treat boxes of their signature bakes in aid of The Date Project, a charity that provides food, water and healthcare to economically disadvantaged people in countries such as Yemen and Palestine. Between them, the Bohra bakers of Leicester raised £440 for The Date Project while raising awareness of the great work undertaken by the charity.
Both fundraising activities were carried out as part of Project Rise, the global Dawoodi Bohra initiative to improve life for the less fortunate among us via a wide range of initiatives in healthcare, nutrition, water and sanitation, environmental responsibility and conservation, and education.
