Working Hard to “Keep Manchester Tidy” – on Earth Day and Every Day

The theme of this year’s Earth Day – the annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection – is Invest In Our Planet.

As part of our global Project Rise initiative to protect and enhance the natural environment, volunteers from the Dawoodi Bohra community of Manchester regularly brave all weathers to spend one weekend a month investing in the cleanliness of the streets around their masjid.

This month’s litter pick was, once again, held in partnership with Emma Krinjen-Kemp, Project Manager of Keep Manchester Tidy.  Despite the rain, plenty of Project Rise volunteers worked hard to ensure that all rubbish was collected and disposed of properly, creating a cleaner and more pleasant environment for the local community.

Ms Krinjen-Kemp was delighted with the turn out and thanked everyone for their hard work in making the event a success.

“Keep Manchester Tidy is delighted to be working with Dawoodi Bohras litter pickers,” she said.  “We have held two joint events recently and collected more than 20 bags of litter.  Dawoodi Bohras litter pickers have certainly shown what can be achieved for the environment when people work together.  We are therefore looking forward to growing this partnership and getting more local people involved in caring for the area.”

The Dawoodi Bohras’ monthly volunteering event is part of a larger effort to create a sense of community spirit around litter picking and ensure that the area stays clean and tidy in the future.  It also presents an opportunity for members of the Dawoodi Bohra community to demonstrate their commitment to protecting the environment together during the holy month of Ramadan.  The team’s efforts serve as a reminder that we must all do our part to help keep our environment clean and healthy.

The litter pick will be repeated in the months to come.  In the meantime, the Dawoodi Bohras of Manchester are grateful to Emma Krinjen-Kemp and all the volunteers who took part in the Dawoodi Bohra litter picking event.  Without their hard work, the area would not be as clean and tidy as it is today.  Together, we can make a real impact on our local communities.
