Running with Purpose: Yusuf Anjarwalla’s Inspiring Marathon Journey in Manchester

Yusuf Anjarwalla, an avid runner and member of the Manchester Dawoodi Bohra community, recently achieved a remarkable feat by completing the Manchester 2024 Marathon.  Yusuf’s running journey is a compelling tale of determination and dedication.  It began in 2012 when he took his first steps as a runner to raise money for The Christie NHS Foundation in Manchester, one of the largest cancer treatment centres in Europe.  His initiation into the marathon world was somewhat serendipitous—when a fellow participant dropped out at the last minute, Yusuf seized the opportunity to fill the vacant spot, embarking on what would become a life-changing path.

Since that unplanned start, Yusuf has become a seasoned marathon runner.  In 2015, he completed his first full marathon, marking the beginning of a series of endurance challenges that would see him not only compete but excel.  Yusuf has since completed eleven full marathons and four half marathons, and participated in six 10km events.  Among his many achievements, two marathons hold a particular significance: he completed them while fasting during the holy month of Ramadan.  Initially doubtful of his ability to combine fasting with such gruelling physical activity, Yusuf found that these experiences deepened his spiritual commitment and physical resilience.

Reflecting on his experiences, Yusuf shared, “Running during Ramadan was a profound journey for me.  It taught me my physical limits and spiritual strength.  I believe when you set your mind to something, with faith and determination, you can achieve beyond what seems possible.”

In the latest Manchester Marathon, Yusuf’s performance was nothing short of inspiring.  Aged 60, he completed the 26.2 miles in 6 hours and 45 minutes, a testament to his hard work and perseverance.  “Each marathon is a story of its own,” Yusuf said.  “This one was about overcoming doubts and pushing through the last miles when your energy is spent but your heart pulls you forward.”

Yusuf’s story is not just about personal achievement but also inspiring others in his community.  Through his running, he has raised awareness and funds for various charitable causes, including Cancer Research UK, reinforcing the Dawoodi Bohra values of helping others and striving for excellence in all pursuits.

As Yusuf continues to lace up his running shoes for future races, his journey serves as a beacon of motivation for many, proving that, with passion and perseverance, every finish line is just the start of a new race.
