Under the umbrella of Project Rise – a global initiative that aims to foster a culture of empathy, awareness and generosity so that no individual is neglected, overlooked or marginalised – the Dawoodi Bohras of Leicester continued their support of local charity One Roof Leicester to provide their clients with food provisions and other essentials.
A donation drive was organised and collection points were set up where members could drop non-perishable foods and other items such as bedsheets. Volunteers then came together to sort the sizeable amount of goods collected, shop for additional items and arrange a drop-off.
One Roof Leicester promotes and raises awareness within the wider community of homelessness issues. With a vision to work with local communities and champion the rights of people affected by homelessness, One Roof provides services such as accommodation, support and advice to people who are homeless, destitute refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerably housed in Leicester.
Santok Odedra, Support Team Leader at One Roof, said:
“Some of the people we are supporting are not able to work or claim welfare support, so their only means of food is from us and other food banks. The items provided by the Dawoodi Bohras were perfect everyday essentials that are much needed by the individuals and families we are currently supporting with food.”
As local communities in the UK tackle issues with homelessness, economic hardships, and a continued impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Dawoodi Bohras of Leicester hope to continue to support such organisations. Under the banner of Project Rise, many Bohra communities around the world work in partnership with charities and government organisations to uplift individuals’ lives.
