This June, the Dawoodi Bohra community gathers in London for Ashara Mubaraka — ten days of remembrance, reflection, and service that are at the heart of who we are.

As the community prepares for Ashara Mubaraka, we are as mindful of our neighbours and the local area as we are of the experience of our attendees. Considerable work has gone into ensuring the event is both meaningful for participants and considerate of the community around us.

About Ashara Mubaraka

Ashara Mubaraka is a period of ten days at the start of the Islamic New Year dedicated to remembering Imam Husain, grandson of the Prophet Mohammed ﷺ, and his valiant stand for the universal values of justice, truth, and humanity nearly 1,400 years ago. The largest gathering within the Dawoodi Bohra community takes place at the venue where His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin leads the commemoration.

His Holiness’ counsel and guidance during Ashara Mubaraka strengthen the community’s foundational ethos of loyalty, patriotism, integrity and generosity — values which encourage Dawoodi Bohras to be exemplary citizens.

The Significance of Ashara Mubaraka

Ashara Mubaraka is not merely a historical observance but an immersive experience that reconnects Bohras to their faith, values, and communal identity. The sermons, reflection, and service that define these ten days actively reinforce the ethics and sense of responsibility that shape who Dawoodi Bohras are — and how they contribute to the societies in which they live. Dawoodi Bohra community centres across the world host the event for their local congregations with daily assemblies in the morning and the evening.

Balancing Community Needs with Event Requirements

This year, the London site will welcome significantly fewer attendees than in 2022. Dawoodi Bohras across the UK have been provided with live broadcasts of the sermons, enabling community members in other cities to observe Ashara Mubaraka at their own local centres rather than travelling to London. As a result, the London gathering will be considerably more contained than in previous years.

We are also conscious that the event dates — 16 to 24 June 2026 — fall during the school term, and our scheduling takes that into account.

The Mawaid (community dining centres) will serve meals daily, with lunch and dinner provided to all attendees.

Healthcare

A medical and wellbeing pavilion will be on site, staffed by qualified medical professionals. It will be open to all — attendees and local residents alike.

Zero-waste policies are in place across all operations, drawing on the Islamic principle of preserving and caring for the environment.

A Continued Legacy

The Dawoodi Bohras of London have lived peacefully in and around Ealing since the 1960s. Our masjid in Northolt is a central meeting point for over 1,000 families in our community. The community upholds values of loyalty, civic responsibility, and harmonious coexistence within the multicultural fabric of the city.

A Shared Effort

Organising the event requires careful planning and collaboration with a range of stakeholders. Given the scale of attendance, the community coordinates with city authorities to plan logistics, and ensure that the event’s conduct is orderly and respectful of public life.

Civic Responsibility

Considerable care goes into planning crowd movement and traffic flow. Volunteer teams and trained professionals have efficiently managed crowd logistics in past years to ensure the event runs smoothly with minimal inconvenience to neighbours and the general public. Building on the experience of the 2022 gathering, we have further developed our Park and Ride arrangements to make arrivals and departures even smoother for attendees and the local community alike, moving almost all of the private vehicular traffic away from the site.

Environment & Sustainability

An integral part of Ashara Mubaraka is a commitment to zero waste. Serving thousands of meals daily, the process includes waste segregation, plastic reduction and recycling campaigns, and reusable infrastructure — all supported by a trained team and reinforced by community-wide awareness.

Spirit of Volunteerism

One of the most notable features of Ashara Mubaraka is that it is almost entirely organised and executed by Dawoodi Bohra volunteers. From technical tasks and artistic work to logistics and serving meals, community members converge in a unique display of teamwork and collective purpose.

Ashara Mubaraka is much more than a religious observance. It is a reminder that shared values, mutual respect, and the binding force of faith come together to create a harmonious and prosperous society — aligning closely with the values that define life in Britain.

Yes. Collections will take place as usual.

No hard road closures are in place. Roads will be gently managed during peak movement windows — morning arrivals between 9:00 and 10:00, afternoon departures around 14:00–15:00, and evening arrivals and departures between 18:00 and 21:30 — to ensure pedestrians can move safely. Outside these windows, all vehicles, deliveries, and through-traffic will proceed entirely as normal.

Yes. All residential streets remain accessible throughout the event. There are no road closures. During peak movement windows there may be brief, minor delays but access will not be blocked.

All bus, rail, and underground routes will run as normal.

In 2025, His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin selected Chennai, India, as the venue for his Ashara Mubaraka sermons.

In 2024, His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin selected Karachi, Pakistan, as the venue for his Ashara Mubaraka sermons.

In 2023, His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin selected Dubai, UAE, as the venue for his Ashara Mubaraka sermons.

In 2022, His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin selected London, United Kingdom, as the venue for his Ashara Mubaraka sermons. 

More than 12,500 community members attended this historic event observed for the first time in Europe. Throughout the event, volunteers implemented sustainable practices to realise the fourth successful ‘zero-waste’ Ashara Mubaraka event.

In 2021, His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin chose the Nairobi campus of Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah as the venue for Ashara Mubaraka. The event was historic in many aspects as it marked the first time that Ashara Mubaraka was hosted by Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah, the community’s premier educational institute.

In times of difficulty and adversity, Sultan al Bohra’s administration mobilised thousands of volunteers across the world to help individual households observe the ten-day event. Sermons were broadcast to every single Bohra household and hundreds of thousands of Dawoodi Bohras participated in this event in a manner never witnessed before. Sultan al Bohra presided over the event at his own residence in Khandala on the outskirts of Mumbai with his close family.

At the invitation of the Sri Lankan government in 2019, Sultan al Bohra Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin chose the capital Colombo as the venue for the Ashara Mubaraka sermons. The large influx of community members helped rejuvenate Sri Lanka’s economy and was the Dawoodi Bohra community’s statement of faith and confidence in the country and the versatility of its people.

Ashara Mubaraka in 2018 in Indore was also ground-breaking in many ways. It saw the largest congregation of Dawoodi Bohras for the event to date, totalling nearly 210,000 people. On the 4th of Muharram, Sultan al Bohra welcomed the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi to the Ashara Mubaraka assembly in which both he and the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, participated in the majlis and addressed the gathering.

In 2017, Sultan al Bohra Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin conducted the sermons in Karachi, Pakistan. Nearly 60,000 community members from across the globe gathered in the heart of the city’s business district where the community’s central masjid is located for the period of ten days. Sultan al Bohra was presented with the Key to Karachi by Mayor Waseem Akhtar during the ten day event.

In 2016, Sultan al Bohra selected Dar es Salaam, the capital of Tanzania, as the venue for the Ashara Mubaraka gathering attended by over 30,000 community members. The President of Tanzania, the late John Magufuli, called on Sultan al Bohra at the Ashara venue and addressed the gathering.

In 2015, Sultan al Bohra was invited to Houston, USA, where he delivered sermons to an audience of over 25,000: the largest community event to have ever taken place in the West.

Upon ascending to the leadership mantle of the community in 2014, Sultan al Bohra Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin conducted his inaugural Ashara Mubaraka as head of the community in Surat, his city of birth, attended by over 100,000 individuals.
